The logistics were indeed "challenging". I worked on that episode (technical director). The original plan was for the Beastie Boys to open on a subway station platform and come up the stairs, but the MTA nixed that. Contrary to some comments, they did NOT lip synch. Each guy had an RF microphone, and there was a complex audio setup along the way to ensure that the signal would work from the east side of Broadway all the way into the Ed Sullivan theater. The technical crew (audio, cable utilities and our Steadicam operator) did an outstanding job. Before the show taping we did one rehearsal with the group, and for the air show we did that number in ONE TAKE! This performance is absolutely amazing, to do this live, on the streets on New York, while walking constantly, not swearing, being perfectly in synch and in time is nothing short of mesmirising and is one of the reasons why the Beasties music will never grow old, never grow stale and never ever stop being awesome Adrock totally kills it on this one. The way he walks with his shoulders back gives me endless joy. That entire walk was a single shot.. Holy shit. These guys didn't make an entrance, they made a video clip. As a cancer patient, MCA has and will always be my hero. I can't wait to see him later this year. Life is beautiful. Enjoy it. Legendary performance, motherfucking killing it. Whenever I hear a Beastie Boys song, my mind goes back to this legendary performance on David Letterman's show which knocked me out when I watched it back then. So I just decided to look it up, and thank God it's here! WOW! Just as exciting to see it now as it was back then! I was outside the Ed Sullivan Theater that day when they were rehearsing this. Awesome performance! The greatest of all time. This is what legends look like. I'm not even into rap but their talent in undeniable. That brought tears to my eyes. Beastie Boys are NYC, Letterman is NYC. Never to be repeated. So cool. The best rap group in the heart of the Big Apple. Their creativity and humor made them relevant for almost 30 years. How many other rap groups can say that? I've come back and watched this quite a few times now, that entrance was simply amazing My miss these days, they're the greatest rap ever...they will be missed ???? Just talent. Whenever I watch this performance, I never only watch it once. This clip shows why the Beasties were the best of all time. They got what hip hop was supposed to be about: The rhymes, the beats, the DJ's, the streets. RIP MCA. You were too good for this place but you did good while you were here. This will never, ever get old. Just too bad-ass. Ingenious, one of the most passionate, fun and talented bands ever. Man, these guys could rap live. And that's hard to do... not that I've tried it, but just look at how many REALLY GOOD rappers can't do it without getting winded or missing lots of words. Watched this far too many times but never fails to put a huge smile on my face. Glorious! That beastie boys energy... I still love how entire room explodes when they blast on to the stage. Epic. If I had one wish I would make the BEASTIE BOYS whole again, Miss you MCA I'm proud to say i saw this on tv live. IT was awesome. Totally blown away that they did this live. Pure talent on display, from the band, to the dj, to the camera crew. They always knew how to put on a show.. Seen many in 20 years.. My favorite was when they all came out in UPS uniforms.. It was classic.. They toured with Cypress hill and Rage Against the machine... It was beyond epic... I am deep deep deep into hip hop for over 25 years and this is one of the best things I have ever seen i remember watching this live, its still amazing Good luck trying to get a large crowd on the streets to behave respectfully like this Bboys are inspiring went from basically clowns to extremely talented musicians almost 30 years of music 85-2012 performances through decades wow RIP MCA Ad rock you rock so well! these guys still continue bring joy into the hearts of so many :-) 2020 and this still gives me goosebumps. Def one of the greatest music performances on a talk show ever. I was 17 when this came out. I’m 33 now and I remember this distinctively! Still one of the best til this day props to whoever operated the camera for that opening How to fall in love with the Beastie Boys again, step 1: watch this video in 2020 #RIPMCA That's what I love about Letterman. He made such good use of being right on Broadway at the Ed Sullivan. Also the time Paul McCartney played right on top of the marquee and the time Dave rode a horse to the theatre. Beasties ruled the fish eye effect... epic performance one of my fave all time live appearances... i get goosebumps when the bassline thumps ;) I totally remember watching this LIVE when I was 14... Blown away to say the least! ???? ???? (Where do the years go?)
