Still relevant today as it was back in the the 1940s. Humanity never learns. Who is watching this in 2020? We need this more than ever. When he is silent everyone is laughing. When he talks everyone is silent. Great man great speech When a comedian in the 1940's is more progressive than modern day politicians. This movie got Charlie Chaplin banned from the United States. You'd think it's an attack on Hitler, but it was an attack on all world leadership. At least the US saw it that way as well. Ironic how a silent film actor made the greatest movie speech of all time that is relevant even to today Im gonna be honest internet. Im terrified of what the next days will bring.. I just want to bring up a quick detail that people tend to overlook with this scene. The look of desperation at the end, after he salutes the crowd, is not coincidental. His look of determination and morally righteous anger fades into one of hopelessness and disillusionment, as he lays his hand upon his head, as if to comfort himself from the shock of his sudden realization; the crowd cheers and chants in unison, as they had for the evil dictator he is mistaken for. The crowd is neither good nor evil, a force of great and powerful will, aimless and wanting of leadership. In that moment, he realizes - the struggle will never end. There will be no great victory, no lasting triumph of good over evil. Forever will we have to fight over the hearts of men, and he carries this realization as a heavy burden. Always liked that this speech exactly mimics Hitler's actual public speaking style. Starting off slow and soft then gradually getting louder and harder until he's virtually shouting. Very clever on Chaplin's part. "even now my voice is reaching millions" ...oh Charlie... if you only knew the good you've done in this world with these fine words. just this one instance alone, of this speech, has been viewed over 2 million times. There are how many uploads of this speech? This film has likely been broadcast and played an unfathomable number of times in the last 79 years. Sweetheart, your voice has likely reached BILLIONS of people by now. When the man famous for never speaking finally did, he had something to say. I really feel like this came from his heart. I'm sorry, but I don't want to be an emperor That's not my business I don't want to rule or conquer anyone I should like to help everyone if possible Jew, Gentile, Black Man, White We all want to help one another, human beings are like that We want to live by each other's happiness, not by each other's misery We don't want to hate and despise one another And this world has room for everyone, and the good Earth is rich and can provide for everyone The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way Greed has posioned men's souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in Machinery that gives us abundance has left us in want Our knowledge has made us cynincal Our cleverness, hard and unkind We think too much, and feel too little More than machinery, we need humanity More that cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness Without these qualities life will be violent, and all will be lost The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men - cries out for universal brotherhood - for the unity of us all Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world - millions of despairing men, women, and little children - victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people To those who can hear me, I say - do not despair The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed - the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people And so long as men die, liberty will never perish Soldiers! Don't give yourselves to brutes - men who despise you - enslave you - who regiment your lives - tell you what to do - what to think and what to feel! Who drill you - diet you - treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men - machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts! You don't hate! Only the unloved hate - the unloved and the unnatural! Soldiers! Don't fight for slavery! Fight for liberty! In the 17th Chapter of St Luke it is written: "the Kingdom of God is within man" - not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people have the power - the power to create machines The power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure Then - in the name of democracy - let us use that power - let us all unite Let us fight for a new world - a decent world that will give men a chance to work - that will give youth a future and old age a security By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power But they lie! They do not fulfil that promise They never will! Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people! Now let us fight to fulfil that promise! Let us fight to free the world - to do away with national barriers - to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men's happiness Soldiers! In the name of democracy, let us all unite The most interesting part here has to be how Chaplin's character goes over the course of 3 minutes goes from speaking in a quiet, calm, dejected manner manner to making a fervent, impassioned Hitler-style speech, but one about unity, freedom and tolerance, not chauvinism and aggression. It’s the start of 2020 and this still relevant Finally, found a version without the overbearing annoying music The ending of the film was meant to be funny, but the second he found out France had surrendered , he scrapped the ending at made this exact speech from the middle of nowhere "Let us fight to free the world, to do away with national barriers..." "He didn't always speek, but when he did.. he made the greatest speech of all time.." "We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost..." The year is 2020. We need humanity, kindness and gentleness. Here following the events of George Floyd and the violence in America and this may be one of the mist relevant times in history for this speech This should be played to the world especially at times like this "The ones who speak less are those who have more to say" Charlie, your words will echo throughout all of eternity. "One day there will be no borders, no boundaries, no flags, and no countries and the only passport will be the heart." –Carlos Santana When a silent man breaks the piercing silence, this is when we need to become Men. MR Chaplin your message had reached millions in your time and billions in the future RIP Greatest silent film actor gave the greatest speach Our leaders have failed us... They act in the interest of the rich elite and not for the greater good. Some governments are bought by rich lobbies to act in their interest, others just oppress their people by force, so they can expand their power. Either way, the people are being treated as a mere resource and not as individuals.. the people in power reap the benefits of our work and leave the scraps for the us. I has been laughing my ass off for the entire movie, then this part came and I was just speechless. So powerful and uplifting just like listening to Martin Luther King Jr more than anything ever filmed, this should be universal required viewing "Machinery that was designed to give us plenty now leaves us in want." Those words alone speak for the 21st century REPOST THIS ON YOUR TIMELINES Hello from 2020. We are currently in a race war/police state. We need Charlie! June 2020! Be human Charlie Chaplin became famous in silent movies, then he turns around and gives one of the best speeches in movie history. Now that's what you call ironic. ???? I really like low-key anarchist Charlie Chaplin. It’s a very good look. We could use some Chaplin about now. Our knowledge has made us cynincal Our cleverness, hard and unkind We think too much, and feel too little More than machinery, we need humanity More that cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness Without these qualities life will be violent, and all will be lost Even more relevant right now than it ever was. 76 years later We still need this speech and that makes me really, really sad I wish I had a power to broadcast this speech on all channels in the world. May we finally take our destiny into our own hands. Let us all unite. This is more true than ever! Look at the world right now. History repeats itself... even today I’ve come to this clip for comfort so many times. The last 6 months have stripped away the utopian fervour that seized me when I first read the words of those stuffy quaint 19th century intellectuals 2 years ago. The arrogance of angry young men is remarkable. The defeat, ridicule and endless road of misery has already rotted away my hope and I’m barely 18. Watching this reminds me of that naïve, relentless optimism that I clung to. Can we rekindle the fire of Charlie Chaplin who gave us a hero who looked like us and laughed like us and cried like us- or are we broken? Is there even a point in trying? Is that itself a reactionary sentiment? Comedians, they act stupid and not serious, yet they say the most intelligent things. A speech which is becoming more relevant day by day. Can we blast this everywhere right now? Anyone else come here during the great revolt of 2020?
